DOES THIS HELP® ONE isn’t just a Great-Granddaughter of the Tribe of Mar — Artist Shimmer is also a Direct Descendant of Catalyntje Trico, Judith Joris Rapalje, and of John Kirton of the Scofield Mine Disaster in Utah.
I am the product of many people who stand for Independence long before statehood to pioneer a land not far from where the Latter-day Saints still walk today — a land built by covenant, sacrifice, and faith. Some may see one as “Mormon,” yet I know myself as I have always known myself: a Child of God, like Jesus Christ Himself.
It wasn’t until Utah joined the Union that the U.S. Government began to claim political influence over us — the descendants of those Latter-day Saint pioneering people — the Children of God, the Eternal Father — those who had already built Zion by faith, not by decree.
And beyond one’s Siblings and Cousins through Grandmother Marie Garrett, one can’t help but wonder: How many others can truly say this lineage runs through them?
Because the line of John Kirton did not stop at a tragedy in a mine.
It continues — eternally — through his children , the sons and daughters who still stand today:
- His son, our Grandpa Joseph (Joe) Kirton, who served this country and later retired from the Railroads.
- His son, John William Kirton, my Father, laid to rest in the Salt Lake City Cemetery Veteran Plot, a son of God and son of a Veteran, who raised Veterans and taught us “Kirton Kids” who we are.
- My brothers. My uncles. All veterans. Because Grandma Elizabeth Jane Mason Kirton insisted on it — insisted that her sons stand for something, defend something, and never forget who they were in the eyes of God.
We are an eternal family of veterans — generation after generation — standing in the Priesthood lineage and the protective hand of the Eternal Father.
We are Children of God, protected by Heaven, guided by Spirit, and rooted in truth deeper than politics, deeper than borders, deeper than any earthly claim.
Truth. Freedom. Justice.
This is our inheritance.
This is our identity.
This is our eternal family.
