Be a Leader, Not a Follower

Good [morning/afternoon/evening] everyone,

I want to speak today about something that affects all of us—especially our youth, but really each of us no matter our age. It’s the choice between being a leader or being a follower.

Too often, people fall into the trap of thinking, “My friends are doing it, so I should too.” But just because your friends are doing something does not mean it’s right for you. In fact, the truest form of leadership is when you have the courage to do what’s right, even if it means standing apart.

Here’s the truth: many people turn to harmful choices, even addictions, because deep down they feel like nobody cares about them. That’s where leadership comes in. A real leader doesn’t just say “no” for themselves—they help others say “no” too. They show that they care, that there’s another way, and that we don’t need to walk into chains before we’ve even had a chance to form healthy habits.

I’m asking each of you here today:

  • Stand up for yourself.
  • Stand up for your friends.
  • Show them there is a better path.

Being a leader is not about being louder or stronger than others. It’s about being brave enough to choose wisely, to guide others with compassion, and to care enough to stop someone you love from walking down a dangerous road.

Addictions can steal futures before they even begin. But leadership—true leadership—can save them.

So I say to you: be a leader, not a follower. Be the one who shows others that their life is worth more, their choices matter, and that they are never alone. Together, we can build a community where caring for one another is the example we set.

Thank you.
