📖 Today’s Vocabulary Lesson
Interpretation · Comprehension · Communication
✦ Introduction
Language is more than words on a page — it’s a living process. Every time we listen, read, or speak, we are moving through three key stages: comprehension, interpretation, and communication. These steps build on each other and form the backbone of how we share ideas and live together as a community.
✦ Comprehension
Definition: The ability to understand and take in information.
Example: When you read a recipe, comprehension means you understand the directions: “Add two cups of flour.”
Why it matters: Comprehension gives us the foundation — the literal grasp of words, numbers, or actions — before we can make sense of them.
✦ Interpretation
Definition: The act of assigning meaning to what we comprehend, often shaped by our experiences, culture, and perspective.
Example: Two people may read the same poem. One interprets it as a love story, another as a prayer.
Why it matters: Interpretation connects the text (or message) to life. It’s where personal insight and perspective take root.
✦ Communication
Definition: The act of expressing and sharing meaning with others.
Example: After reading and interpreting the poem, you explain to a friend what it means to you.
Why it matters: Communication is the bridge. Without it, comprehension and interpretation remain private. With it, ideas grow, spread, and inspire.
✦ How They Work Together
- Comprehension → Taking in the message.
- Interpretation → Making sense of the message.
- Communication → Sharing the message with others.
Think of it as a circle. The more clearly you comprehend, the deeper your interpretation can be. The better you interpret, the more effective your communication becomes. And when you communicate well, you help others comprehend and interpret in turn.
✦ Reflection for Students
Ask yourself:
- Did I comprehend what was said?
- How am I interpreting it in my own mind?
- Can I communicate it back so someone else understands?
When we practice these steps daily, we become stronger learners, leaders, and friends.
✦ Closing Thought
Words are seeds. Comprehension waters them. Interpretation nurtures them. Communication lets them bloom.
