Somewhere along the way, education put the cart before the horse.

I was taught to build the forms. My children were taught to fill them out.

That may seem like a small difference, but it changes everything.

When I first entered the workforce as a receptionist, I wasn’t simply shown where to type. I learned why forms existed, how information flowed from one person to another, how records were organized, and why accuracy mattered. I learned to create documents, organize files, answer phones professionally, manage communication, and understand the structure behind the work.

Today, many students graduate knowing how to click Submit, but not how the page they submitted was created. They know how to log into a platform but not what a domain name is. They know how to upload a file but not where it lives. They know how to follow a link but not how hyperlinks connect the web itself.

There is nothing wrong with teaching students to use technology. The problem is stopping there.

Technology should not be a mystery. It should be a language.

We teach children the alphabet before expecting them to write stories. We teach arithmetic before algebra. We teach them to stand before they walk and to walk before they run. Yet in digital education, we often reverse that order. We ask students to depend on systems they have never been taught to understand.

The internet was designed as a network of independent computers communicating through open standards. Every website has an address. Every page has a location. Every file has a purpose. Every link creates a relationship. These are foundational concepts that should belong to every graduate, regardless of whether they become programmers.

Not everyone needs to become a software engineer.

But everyone should understand the digital world they live in.

Just as every citizen benefits from understanding reading, writing, mathematics, and civics, every citizen benefits from understanding how information moves through cyberspace. They should know what it means to own a domain, publish a webpage, organize information, protect their data, and recognize the difference between owning their work and simply renting space on someone else’s platform.

When we teach only the tools, students become dependent on whoever owns those tools.

When we teach the principles, students become adaptable. Software changes. Platforms disappear. Companies rise and fall. Understanding lasts.

That is the difference between teaching someone to use a product and teaching someone to build a future.

My hope is that education returns to its purpose—not simply preparing students to participate in today’s technology, but preparing them to understand tomorrow’s.

The goal is not to create millions of programmers.

The goal is to create millions of people who comprehend the digital world well enough to make informed choices, protect their independence, and become creators when inspiration calls.

That is putting the horse back in front of the cart.
