STANDING WITNESSES: WHY THE THREE NEPHITES STILL MATTER TODAY

Today I want to speak about something we often know, but may not always live as if it is still happening.

I want to talk about Christ’s ministry in the Americas, and specifically about the Three Nephites—those disciples who did not taste of death, but were granted to remain and minister on the earth.

Their story is not just history.

It is ongoing testimony.

Christ Came Here — And He Still Leads

In 3 Nephi 11, the resurrected Jesus Christ descended from heaven and stood among the people on this continent.

He did not send a message.

He did not send a representative.

He came Himself.

He said:

“Behold, I am Jesus Christ… I have come into the world.”

He invited the people—one by one—to feel the wounds in His hands, His feet, and His side.

That moment teaches us something powerful:

Christ is not distant.

He is not symbolic.

He is real, resurrected, and personal.

The Ministry Was Not Meant to End

After teaching the people—after healing, blessing, praying, and establishing His Gospel—Christ did something remarkable.

In 3 Nephi 28, He asked His disciples:

“What is it that ye desire of me?”

Nine desired to come to Him after their lives ended.

But three said:

They wanted to stay.

They wanted to continue His work.

They wanted to bring souls unto Him for as long as the earth would stand.

And Christ granted it.

Who Are the Three Nephites?

They are not myth.

They are not folklore.

They are part of Christ’s living ministry.

Christ said they would:

  • Not taste of death
  • Continue to minister
  • Bring souls unto Him
  • Be protected until His return

And Mormon recorded that they would be among the people, though often not recognized.

Why This Matters Today

Now here is the question:

If they are still here…

If Christ’s ministry through them continues…

Then what does that mean for us?

It means we are not living in a world where God used to act.

We are living in a world where God still acts.

It means:

  • You are not alone
  • The work is still moving forward
  • Christ’s Church is not just organized—it is alive

Do We Recognize the Work Around Us?

The scriptures say the Three Nephites would minister among people, sometimes without being known.

So I ask:

How often do we dismiss what we don’t recognize?

How often do we expect God to act in only one way?

Christ did not come to the Nephites the way many expected.

And today, He still works in ways many overlook.

Sometimes quietly.

Sometimes through ordinary people.

Sometimes in ways that require spiritual eyes to see.

The Greater Lesson: Becoming Like Them

The power of this story is not just that the Three Nephites exist.

It is what they chose.

They chose:

  • Service over rest
  • Mission over comfort
  • Christ over self

They asked:

“How can we stay and help?”

That is the question for us today.

Not:

“Are they still here?”

But:

“Am I doing the same work?”

Christ’s Teachings Still Apply

In 3 Nephi 12–14, Christ taught the higher law:

  • Blessed are the meek
  • Love your enemies
  • Forgive all
  • Be pure in heart

These were not temporary teachings.

They are the pattern for Zion.

And the Three Nephites have been living that pattern ever since.

A Living Gospel Requires Living Disciples

We cannot claim to believe in a living Christ while living as if everything is in the past.

A living Gospel requires:

  • Action
  • Accountability
  • Awareness

Christ said:

“What manner of men ought ye to be?”

And then He answered:

“Even as I am.”

Standing in a World That Often Doesn’t See

We live in a time where truth is often questioned, dismissed, or misunderstood.

But that is not new.

The Nephites also struggled to recognize what was right in front of them.

Even after Christ came, people still had to choose.

And so do we.

The Invitation

So today, I invite you to do three things:

1. Remember that Christ’s work is ongoing

Not just in heaven.

Not just in history.

But here.

Now.

2. Look for the evidence of His hand

In your life.

In your family.

In your community.

3. Choose to be part of the work

You don’t need to be one of the Three Nephites to serve like them.

You just need to choose Christ the way they did.

Closing Witness

I testify that Jesus Christ lives.

I testify that He came to this continent.

I testify that His Gospel is not finished.

And I testify that the work He began continues—through His disciples, through His Church, and through those who choose to follow Him.

Whether seen or unseen, known or unknown—

His work moves forward.

And we are invited to be part of it.
